Concrete Surprise India

Ahmedabad is not really a typical place on the list when visiting India, we have only seen a spattering of other ‘visitors’ to the city since our arrival. Around every corner I have been coming across an array of cast concrete ornamentation on buildings new and old which has been an unexpected bonus for this visit. We came here for the kite festival but have already had two very full and fascinating days prior to it even starting.

High & Over House

High & Over is widely considered to be the first and finest house to be built in the Modern style in Britain. Designed in 1929 by Amyas Connell (who later became part of the pioneering architectural practice Connell, Ward & Lucas), the Grade II* listed house is being offered for sale in its entirety for the first time since it was divided into two properties in 1962.

Overhill Road House

This house by Jeffrey James is located on a residential road in East Dulwich, and was completed in 2006. It is a spacious and characterful home that fills with light.

Using the framework of an existing 1920s house, James has fashioned a spectacular Modernist structure that has been described by the The Architects’ Journal as “radical” and “exceptional”. Externally, the design clearly echoes the early Modernism of Le Corbusier and the Bauhaus architects, yet internally the large, open-plan spaces are more in tune with contemporary life.

Woodstock Studios House

This live/work penthouse apartment forms part of the former BBC studios in Shepherd’s Bush. It was designed in the 1990s by Jonathan Tuckey and Francois Girardin, and was Tuckey’s first project after leaving the practice of David Chipperfield.

Wingårdh Mill House

I absolutely adore this house by Wingårdh Arkitektkontor AB.

Located in Vastra Karup, Sweden, the Wingardhs Mill House is a specifically designed home which is based around swedish sauna and bathing rituals. The home is fairly small but boasts all the basic necessities, an indoor sauna and is set in a beautiful garden.

Thomas Heatherwick Bridge

I have always loved Thomas Heatherwick’s ‘Rolling Bridge’ completed in 2004.

Tham & Videgård Summer House

The architecture practice Tham & Videgård have a beautiful approach to summer houses and private residences championing the use of cladding materials in innovative ways. The geometry of the building has been dictated by the rocks on the site and the glazed areas have been oriented to maximise solar gain while shielding the outdoor areas from the prevailing winds.

Clyfford Still Museum

Since I never had a formal structural design education I am always fascinated by other firms’ approaches. It is rare to see such a detailed design process disclosed, so I was relishing the sight of concept through to near completion shown on Allied Works Architecture’s website.
