Margaret Howell Calendar 2009

I have been collecting Margaret Howell’s calendars for the last couple of years - they are the perfect compliment to any Modernist interior.

This year she has chosen to feature a selection of iconic furniture and products by British manufacturers like Robin Day, Kandya and the good old classic Anglepoise.

Here is a little taster …

Oak Student Collaborative

Consider the origins of furniture – philosophical and sociological aspects – the way a piece of furniture functions in a room, how it is conceived by its users, and how form, materials and any other aspect of a piece of furniture affect our senses.

Oak. is the result of an extracurricular, collaborative activity between 18 students from the BA and MA programs at Lund University School of Industrial Design.  The project began with a workshop led by Jonas Lindvall of Lindvall A&D, exploring archetypes and stereotypes in the world of furniture.  What is the difference and what qualities or virtues make a piece of furniture one versus the other?  The project was presented at Designersblock Milano 2011

Manoteca Indoor Table

The Indoor Table - It’s a table, it’s a desk, it’s a street door.

Manoteca is a little house in a park, a lab where old and abandoned things are hosted among with recycled materials, reinvented and reassembled.

They all are one-offs, handmade and treated with natural paints.

Catch Bowl

Bent plywood / Sycamore / Stainless steel / Magnet

Designer’s Statement :

We proposed a shelf, focusing on corners, which inevitably exist in every room. When a hemisphere is divided into a quarter and three quarters, the quarter snugly fits into a concave corner and the three quarters onto a convex corner.

Based on this idea, we created a joyful and lightsome shelf that allows the user to adjust its height and also use it as a bowl to enjoy putting things in it just like playing a ball toss game in an athletics festival.

On the lid and at the bottom of the bowl, the radial patterns made by the alternately inverted wood grain of the shiny sycamore sliced veneer seem like twinkling stars.

By splitting into two parts, this bowl catches edges and catches things to become little shelves in the corners of a familiar room. When one part catches its counterpart, they become one whole bowl again.
