Paper Alphabet is a bespoke typeface created especially for Sculpture Today, a comprehensive and illustrated overview of contemporary sculpture published by Phaidon Press.
The alphabet sprung from wanting to highlight what makes sculpture different from other art forms. by cutting and folding a flat sheet of paper, a three-dimensional alphabet was devised. A considerable amount of effort went into crafting and arranging the letterforms, each one playfully varying in shape, the depth remaining constant.
The legibility of the type is greatly influenced by the angle from which it is viewed. When viewed directly from above, the edges of the paper create outlines, making the letterforms easy to read.

Geometrical artisan products beautifully crafted in Raulí wood as seen at Tent. Designed by Cristián Domínguez + Raúl Domínguez of The Andes House.
Through the investigation of different materials that are utilized in traditional artisan design, including copper, wool, clay, and wood, TheAndesHouse® chose a basic material that can be found in 80% of the homes in Chile, wicker, to create the line of products under the brand madeinMIMBRE ©.
Their objects are the novel result of TheAndesHouse®’s constant search for original beauty, for recovering the original vocation of the materials chosen, and then effectively mixing them with the excellence of contemporary design, and the traditions of the best artisans of the country.
Designer’s Statement : This line of utilitarian products; fountains, plates and mugs have been designed and developed from a technique of the Mapuche people. The piece is worked like an sculpture by Mapuche artisans, and made functional through an industrial workplace. From a piece of wood, the artisan works out through the cut, and inside the room is emptied through an industrial lathe. The Andes House develops a line of container objects two ways of boosting production.

A great range of industrial styled stools from US based manufacturer Environment seen at the London Design Festival.

Just watched the latest episode of Grand Designs … loving the exterior paint colours of the Tenby Lifeboat Station (although not that well represented in these photos!)
The boathouse has been listed by www.cadw.wales.org.uk.

For someone that doesn’t even own a bike I am becoming mildly obsessed with all things ‘Bike’.
Love love love … the Bike Porter.

French artist Laurent Millet’s installations and photographs are uniquely ethereal and beguiling. Exhibited and collected extensively, his work challenges the viewers’ initial perceptions and explores the uncanny effect of translating objects to images, at times playing on the two dimensional surface of the photographic image and its capacity to render realistic spatial depths.

At the entrance to this striking installation I was given a pair of red socks, then told to follow the red carpet bathed in red light to the main hall. It was all a bit inverted Twin Peak-esque, but well worth the trauma of handing a stranger my slightly ripe shoes at the end of my first day treading the LDF path around London.
A touring part of the London Design Festival the REDDRESS event is part of the international programme of World Design Capital Helsinki 2012. REDDRESS is part of the permanent collection of Design Museum, Helsinki, Finland.

Designer’s Statement :
My biggest wish is to build the cure system. I wanted to be closer to people’s everyday lives and I started to train myself at woodworking and furniture design in Hongik University in 2000. I enjoyed making thing happen. But, when I was about to graduate, I could not find many problems in furniture and products which already existed. I found more the problems from an individual’s psychological state. I found more the problems in the social system which our community has been built. Lots of questions were raised up from this point. During two years at the Royal College of Art, I trained myself more in the social context under the thought of, Design cannot stay any longer in the self contained artifacts. I pushed myself more in the direction of design activism, rather than making objects. I explored in the context through the story, films, and situation creations. I was looking for the ways in which I can offer something to the community through design. I was trying to create a cure system which could train people and myself.

Designer’s Statement :
Ciara O’Neill is a London based furniture/lighting designer with a First Class Degree with Honours from the Dublin Institute of Art and Design. Since graduating she has completed several private commissions while also working at SCP. In 2009 she embarked on a self directed project investigating the untapped structural possibilities of corrugated plastic.
During the course of her experiments Ciara developed a unique method of forming this industrial sheet material, pushing it in ways it has never been pushed before. Having now mastered the process she creates beautiful sculptural forms which provide exciting diffusion for naked light.

Just saw these beautiful concrete rings at SCP by 22 Design Studio in Taiwan.
